I was 35 years old, selling memberships at International Fitness Centers in Tucson Arizona. Having been challenged in my earlier years of finding myself it was this three years that allowed me to discover the business world and evolve into what I believe of myself as a top flight journeyman marketer.
My mother did all she could to raise three boys on her own, while holding down three jobs. Her example is what drives me today. I certainly did not want to work as hard as she did. I was determined to find my way, but never quite knowing what way that was.
With no guidance, my Mother did not make it through high school. So, in her eyes, it was great of me simply to graduate and earn that diploma my mother was proud, indeed.
At age 17, I enlisted in the Army in 1968, and found myself in Vietnam by age 18. It was my first look at the outside world. The trouble 1960′s notwithstanding, I found myself lost and bewildered.
One day I found myself at the health club, working. I would always say I had great communication skills – I could always sell, never knowing really just the talent I had- creativity and a niche for marketing. Selling was something I could finally sink my teeth into and it was not really work ! (My definition of “work” is when you prefer to be doing something else.) I don’t work; I make money at what I have fun doing. There are responsibilities that may define it as work in the general sense, but that is a small price to pay for “no one owes us a living.” This is what my mother really drove home to myself and my brothers.
I found creative ways in which to market the health club. Distributing a neighborhood flyer to businesses near the health club, and they would in turn participate by giving me their flyers. It was a simple concept and one that involved “cross marketing.” I simply found neighboring businesses that like me were tired of getting pitched to by advertising people so we created our own flyer with all ten of us equally sharing the total cost, divided by ten, the distribution, divided by ten, etc. I put it all together. Though I didn’t know it at the time, I was getting into the publishing business.
One day, when what I was doing wasn’t working I decided to go to Tucson’s largest employer and see if they had something I could print at no cost to them and something that would contain advertising. I discovered they had a newsletter…well, that is how it really all BEGAN.
I kept this brochure flyer going every week for 9 months while still working at the health club. It was time for me to make a decision, based on the fact that I could no longer do both, so I went to Hughes Aircraft .I had to take a chance. I went from a 35k stable position to I don’t know if I can pay my rent or car payment unless I MAKE it happen on my own. I remembered how hard my mother worked for little reward. I decided to go for it, and quit the fitness club.
Now I was working out of my house, and taking care of my mother. I made phone calls and sold advertising. I was still working with an outside printer. I quickly became frustrated, having to use them for my design and printing; always wondering over the first 9 months, wouldn’t it be great if I could do my own printing. What I didn’t know at the time was that day was not too far away.
One day, I saw an ad in the paper for printing equipment that was for sale. Not having any money, something nevertheless told me to go see this equipment. It was old. Worse, I had no experience at what this stuff even looked like, except with my own printer for almost a year. I blew the dust off the press and smiled at the guy (my famous “salesman’s” smile). I said, “You are never going to sell this. I’m sure it works great, right?” “Of course it does,” the man replied. I then said, “If I agree to your price, will you let me make payments?” I brushed my finger over the press, and let the dust hit the room. He looked up and said, “Sure!” He either knew or feared that I would walk out and he would lose the sale. I said, “Can I make the first payment next month? I have a print job to do, but I can’t get paid for that job unless you allow me access to the press so I can make the money to pay you with. He agreed. I still had no where to put the equipment and no one that knew how to run it! I said, “What would you say if I paid you a few hundred dollars a month to allow me to keep my press (see it was mine already) here and hire my own press man, but allow me use of your other equipment like your cutter, your folder, for $5,000 in payments to make after I start making money?” I was now in the printing business. I couldn’t wait to sell printing to my advertisers and advertising to my print customers – it was a beautiful thing. It was no time at all before I was printing and publishing all under one roof – my roof – as Access Marketing Systems. I would specialize in guerilla marketing tactics in a way most have not seen. I would sell logos for as little as $99. I knew full well that they would have to put that logo on many things, the least of which is their business cards, letterheads, envelopes, – not to mention brochures. I discovered a niche that propelled me forward –newsletters.
I was publishing upwards to 30 monthly newsletters. We would turn these around in 72 hours from raw copy to printed word. The interesting thing is how I marketing. I would publish these newsletters totally free of charge and I would retain their advertising rights. I would always explain that their interests are my only interests as I would never sell to anyone that would be conflicting. Of the 30 newsletters only half dozen or so I did simply for the advertising revenue. I would work the other accounts as a print job.
Necessity has been the mother of invention throughout the history of man. The history of Access Communications Team Innovation is how I often handled the needs due to lack of resources. I learned how to work smart.
For the last 10 years, we have been using our own “Bizgenerator” Data base management system. This data base – developed by myself – simply started out as a more evolved way to handle my tickler file. Most publishing houses have to dictate to their sales people a territory or a category that is theirs specifically. They do this for one reason – so people don’t step on others toes. A data base, not just for customers, but also for prospects allows you to capture information and utilize it well beyond the time that the salesman who initially entered the information has left. The information stays with us; it helps us work smarter. Because of this data base I have developed a 10,000 name list of relationship related businesses broken into 40 address books.
What a change! My past work experiences on the run that included, creating and performing in Male Exotic Dancers on my own shows in over 3 clubs weekly; Female wrestling; performed in Porn; worked in the seedy side of sex trade in Los Angeles. All during a 5 year period with breaks to go back to jail for one reason or the other, most of which were parole violations from constant and ongoing drug use. (Heroin primarily, or opiates in general, cocaine, and virtually everything else, this all done mainlining…I was addicted to the needle as much or if not more than the drugs.)
This is rough, but does give a glimpse that contrasts greatly with my new reality. Who can say what I’m saying without having anyone “put me on trial?” I have done what few have; it is that simple. Still no one wishes to tell my story, or give me credit for what I have accomplished, and all that I have earned through sheer preservation, perseverance, and a determined will to get out of life what it has to offer, if you just work for it!

Culture, Monument carved with the knife of discontent…snots al

I want to do what I want, when I want, and I want it now…says the grandchildren of the “ME” generation

This seed of contempt was first seen in the ME GENERATION of the fifty’s, fermented in the home of the upper class.
The slippery slope was off to a great start. This generation I chose not to to participate in gave birth to the “WHO ME” generation, the slope growing more slippery, provided their parents with their first grandchild, the NOT ME generation.
It is difficult to name the following generation except to anticipate that it will be named the “NOT ME EITHER” generation. It is this that I hope to intercept, and impact America, their is no time to lose, for it will be too late, as in Rome and all that fell with it.
The world had evolved post WWII …for now to “Keep up with the Jones” the need for a two family income was paramount, Children now came second. The world of Visa, Mastercard has arrived.
Compensation for the lack parental love and devotion came in three forms.
1. Material things.
2. No boundaries.
3. No expectations
So much of what needs to be said is not being said by anyone. Many point of views. cultural, political, social have been stifled. Contempt for authority bred by modern-era parenting of “when I have time” has defined our youth of the past, modeling today’s behavior for the children of tomorrow.
The GOTCHA MEDIA, provides leads to the legal community to create what is simply an ongoing and growing litigious enviornment that precludes positive and cooperative interaction (yes, civilized) with those who disagree, regardless of the sides taken.
Add the dynamic of enabling the performance lacking citizenry and what has been created, but for survival alone, is a politically incorrect enviornment. To me it is Inpolitically correct and it is the basis of the thesis for “Beyond Puke.” http://www.beyondpuke.com
The lack of boundaries parents demand is a direct result from the guilt felt when given things instead of love
