Wildfire Today

SW area issues warning for firefighters working near US/Mexico border Written by Bill on June 2nd, 2011

In what seems to be an annual occurrence, the Southwest Geographic Area has issued another “Safety Alert” with the subject: “US – Mexico Border Fire Operations Safety”. Saying the border area has become “increasingly dangerous” to firefighters, they listed in the two-page document some watchout situations:

“These are potential situations firefighters could encounter:

1. Illegal immigrant and smugglers warming fires have started wildland fires.

2. Illegal activity along the border has involved “copy cat vehicles” painted to look like agency vehicles.

3. Radios and phones don’t work in many locations on the border.

4. Awareness that when using cell phones to communicate, you may experience interference from Mexico.

5. Conflicts in air space with helicopters assigned to the fire and helicopters used for law enforcement.

6. Undocumented aliens are hiding or camping within or adjacent to the incident operations.

6. Potential health risks associated with large amounts of trash or caches of drugs burning.

7. Arson fires being started to divert attention from illegal activities happening nearby.

8. Clusters of illegal immigrant vehicles.

9. Packs and equipment being stolen.

10. Potential lack of law enforcement or medical support on the Mexico side of the border.”

UNIDOS Ten Point Resolution on Ethnic Studies:

“We Want an Educational System Where Many Cultures Fit”

1. WE WANT OUR ETHNIC STUDIES CLASSES TO CONTINUE TO MEET CORE SOCIAL SCIENCE REQUIREMENTS.

Ethnic Studies classes are meant to help students with core class credit, increase student interest in education and give us a chance to learn about not only our own culture, but others as well. Turning our Ethnic Studies classes into elective courses is a slow death sentence to the department for several reasons. First, students are required to take a high number of core requirements in order to graduate – many of the students simply would not have the time within their academic schedules to take both Literature and Mexican-American Literature. Secondly, this move is basically making Ethnic Studies “second class” classes; why should we say to our students that studying Herman Melville counts as core requirement but reading Gloria Anzaldua does not? The school board and the State are completely undermining the value of our history and culture. We say NO to downgrading our Ethnic Studies classes into electives! Our classes must remain core courses!

   2. WE WANT THE REPEAL OF HB 2281.

The wave of anti-Mexican, anti-migrant sentiment in the U.S. is growing. In the Arizona legislature, racism and xenophobia is out of control. In the schools, serious educational inequities are affecting students of color. By making it hard for us to access education and our cultural history, they intend to keep us down us an un-educated, second-class status group that doesn’t know its roots and is used as cheap labor or is incarcerated in the prison system. HB 2281 is only the latest example of a long history of discrimination. Repeal HB 2281 NOW!

   3. WE WANT ETHNIC STUDIES PROGRAMS TO EXPAND EVERYWHERE: FROM K-12 TO UNIVERSITY.

The success of this program needs to expand to all school districts, statewide and nationwide. According to 10 years of data compiled by the Mexican American Studies Advisory Committee, 97.5% of students that take these classes graduate high school and 70% will seek out education beyond the high school level. So why would the State of Arizona and TUSD want to eliminate a program that is a solution to the educational crisis Latinos are facing? Do they want us to fail? You would think that because of its success they would want to EXPAND the program. We believe every student in America should have access to Ethnic Studies programs. We want Ethnic Studies to expand throughout all of Arizona and all across the country grades K-12 to all universities!

   4. WE WANT NO SCHOOL TURN-AROUNDS, NO SCHOOL CLOSURES AND FULL SUPPORT FOR RINCON HIGH AND PALO VERDE HIGH SCHOOL COMMUNITIES.

So politicians in Arizona can fundraise millions of dollars to defend racist legislation in the courts, yet they can’t find money for our books or to keep our schools open? There is no reason why any schools should close. Why is it that prison beds are increasing, while schools are closing? Why are our teachers at Rincon and Palo Verde High Schools fired and disrespected? We want no school turn-arounds, no school closures, and complete support for Rincon and Palo Verde High Schools!

5. WE WANT A TUSD GOVERNING BOARD THAT IS ACCOUNTABLE AND WILL STAND UP FOR ALL STUDENTS.
The purpose of a governing school board is to make decisions benefitting students and communities and promote educational opportunities for all. We need an accountable and democratic school board that will listen to students and community. We need strong-willed board members that will defend the community against any and all racist attacks. Right now, we are under serious attack from the Arizona legislature and State Superintendent. Yet the TUSD board as a whole is FAILING to defend us and is in fact considering a vote against us. The school board and superintendent are subject to the will of the people. If they can turn-around our schools, we should have the right to turn-around the board. We want an educational system that truly values students, teachers, community, democracy and ethnic studies! We want a governing board that is accountable to us and stands up for all students!

6. WE WANT AN EQUITABLE EDUCATION FOR ALL.

There are serious problems in the educational system when a high number of Latin@s drop out or are pushed out of our schools. The Pew Hispanic Center recently released a study based on newly released U.S. Census data showing that Latin@ dropout rates are higher than other ethnicities. Of Latin@ adults 20 and over in the United States, 41% do not have regular high school diplomas. Arizona has one of the highest high school dropout rates in the nation. Latin@ students are severely segregated and neglected in the schools. Ethnic Studies is one solution to the deep educational inequities negatively affecting students of color in our Arizona schools. This is why Ethnic Studies must stay. We demand equitable education for ALL students!

7. WE WANT AN IMMEDIATE END TO ALL RACIST, ANTI-MIGRANT, ANTI-INDIGENOUS POLICIES.

In April 2010, a group of UN human rights experts declared their serious concern over laws recently enacted by the state of Arizona, that affect people of color, indigenous people and migrants, subjecting them to discriminatory treatment. This is what they said about SB 1070 and HB 2281: “a disturbing pattern of legislative activity hostile to ethnic minorities and immigrants has been established with the adoption of an immigration law that may allow for police action targeting individuals on the basis of their perceived ethnic origin, and a law that suppresses school programs featuring the histories and cultures of ethnic minorities.” We want an immediate end to white supremacy, anti-migrant, anti-indigenous policies!

   8. WE WANT FULL COMPLIANCE WITH OUR CIVIL AND HUMAN RIGHTS.

The ban on Ethnic Studies is unconstitutional, dehumanizing and is in violation of our human rights. According to Article 31 of the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples, we have “the right to maintain, control, protect and develop [our] cultural heritage, traditional knowledge and traditional cultural expressions.” Basically, Ethnic Studies is a human right. So TUSD, the State Board of Education and the State of Arizona must act in accordance to international human rights law because Ethnic Studies is a human right!

   9. WE WANT ATTORNEY GENERAL TOM HORNE, STATE SUPERINTENDENT JOHN HUPPENTHAL AND GOVERNOR JAN BREWER IMMEDIATELY REMOVED FROM POWER.

It is clear that these so called leaders of our state do not represent us. Tom Horne, John Huppenthal and Jan Brewer are here to maintain power and control among the rich, while they throw our people under the bus. Politicians, whether Republican or Democrat, that do things to attack or oppress any group must be taken out of their positions. No policy or politician should ever harm a group of people. We condemn Tom Horne for introducing the ban on Ethnic Studies, John Huppenthal for vowing to continue the attack on Ethnic Studies and Jan Brewer for signing racist legislation. They themselves are in violation of HB 2281 because Horne, Huppenthal and Brewer are promoting resentment and hatred towards other races—Latino/Indigenous peoples. According to the U.S. Declaration of Independence, “To secure these rights [of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness], governments are instituted among men [and women], deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed; that, whenever any form of government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the right of the people to alter or to abolish it, and to institute a new government…” We demand for their immediate removal from power!

  10. WE WANT LOCAL CONTROL OF OUR EDUCATION.

As local tax payers in the community, we should have the right to control our education since we help fund it. Why are we getting told how our education should look like by Phoenix and Tucson politicians that don’t even live in our communities? We, the community of students, parents, and community members, should have direct decision-making power over the decisions that affect our education. We want local control of our education!

AIN’T NO POWER LIKE THE POWER OF THE YOUTH!

As UNIDOS, we will continue to fight for our education even without the support of state politicians or local school board members. Let’s take back our power. The answer is not in adult politicians; it’s inside of us, in our mothers and fathers that sacrificed everything for us, in our grandparents that struggled yesterday and in the youth that struggle today and tomorrow. WE have the power to RISE and create a healthy reality based on dignity and respect for all of us.

We want an educational system where many cultures fit! Let the youth movement move you! Ain’t no power like the power of the youth!

U.N.I.D.O.S is a new youth coalition of students defending our Ethnic Studies program and promoting the values of diversity, justice and equity in our education. / Contact: Unidos.Tucson@gmail.com

Illegal immigration updates… Tourism is up in Arizona and local law enforcement is speaking out against the government.

Not what Team Obama and other statist politicians want to hear, methinks.

Pinal County Arizona Sheriff Paul Babeu is blunt and honest about the illegal immigration situation in Arizona and Pres. Obama’s lackluster, politically motivated response (except when deciding to sue the state). Give this articulate sheriff a round of applause for speaking out.

He told Sean Hannity the following about Team Obama and DHS… “they don’t want to achieve border security… They’re siding with the ACLU.”

Babeu also said the president has looked at this situation “from a purely political concern, rather than a public safety concern,” and takes the president to task for the paltry number of National Guard troops assigned to protect Arizona’s unsecured southern border.

FOX: Arizona Sheriff Babeu on Obama: “They Don’t Want to Achieve Border Security”

The Arizona boycott failed…

Despite the efforts of Los Angeles, San Francisco, and other illegal-alien-supporting cities to bankrupt Arizona by boycotting the state, tourism in the Grand Canyon state is UP. Mayor Phil Gordon, however, has been a sniveling liar, telling the press the exact opposite… sorry, Phil. Your La Raza Christmas card may be late this year, dude.

I attribute this good news to the outstanding efforts of patriots across the nation who have participated in Arizona “Buycott” efforts — thank you, thank you, thank you. Also, a number of companies that may never have thought to have a convention in Arizona decided to bring their business here as a wave of support. While washed-up or D-list music groups may have cancelled their concerts in Arizona, legendary Elton John not only performed in Tucson last week, but he laid into those celebrities for boycotting the state. Elton, you’re a gem.

Others coming to Arizona to perform include Carrie Underwood, Cyndi Lauper, American Idol Live, Celtic Woman, Gabriel Iglesias, The Oak Ridge Boys, Kottonmouth Kings, Ronnie Milsap, and many others.

From FOX News, Arizona Hotels Thriving Despite Boycotts Over Immigration Law:

Arizona’s tourism industry has a target on its back, but the widespread boycotts over the state’s immigration law might not be hitting the mark.

Recent data compiled by a market research group show hotel bookings across the state — as well as in tourism hot spots Phoenix and Scottsdale — have been on the rise the past two months.

The numbers could dispel warnings from local officials that Arizona stands to lose a fortune and dampen the chances that cities and organizations will be able to compel the state to reverse its immigration law by choking its economy with a sanctions-style business boycott.

“Fundamentally, the boycotts have been unsuccessful,” said Barry Broome, president of the Greater Phoenix Economic Council.

The data from hotel industry research firm STR showed that for the state of Arizona, hotel occupancy was up 5.7 percent in May and up 8.3 percent in June compared with the same time a year ago.

In Phoenix, occupancy was up 10.6 percent in June; in Scottsdale, it was up 10.7 percent for the same period. Revenue also was up, with Arizona hotels raking in $148 million last month — up more than 11 percent from a year ago.

Broome said the state also has been able to attract new businesses to locate in Arizona despite bad publicity. He said his group plans to announce 2,000 to 3,000 new jobs thanks to investment from California, where Arizona boycotts are in place in several major cities, over the next few months.

“Business continues,” said Garrick Taylor, spokesman with the Arizona Chamber of Commerce and Industry.

That doesn’t mean Arizona business groups are done worrying. To the contrary, they’re still on high alert over the potential damage the boycotts could do in the long run.

According to the Arizona Hotel and Lodging Association, leisure hotel bookings are up after a record bad year in 2009, but the conventions and meetings sectors have taken a hit — a development that could cost Arizona millions over the long term given that conventions are sometimes booked years in advance.

The Greater Phoenix Economic Council and Greater Phoenix Chamber of Commerce have launched a new website to build opposition to the boycotts. The site, “Stop AZ Boycotts,” features video testimonials from Arizona workers about how the boycotts have negatively affected their livelihoods.

In one, a waitress at The Arizona Center said canceled conventions have cut her earnings in half.

Taylor said that despite the recent hotel data, the boycotts could hurt Arizona’s image to the point that it’s “no longer a destination that is on people’s radar screen.”

He said part of the problem is that the backlash contributes to instability in the local economy. “It’s not exactly an economic development plan,” he said.

Many of the boycotts were pitched as a way to pressure Arizona to rescind its immigration law, which makes illegal immigration a state crime. The groups claimed the law, set to go into effect Thursday unless a federal government court challenge prevents it, would lead to racial profiling by unfairly targeting Hispanics regardless of their immigration status.

City governments typically banned employees from traveling to the state and in some cases moved to reconsider contracts with state businesses.

But some of those campaigns ran into glitches along the way, watering down the impact. Los Angeles exempted from the boycott a contract with an Arizona company that provided its red-light cameras. The Los Angeles City Council also is reportedly considering another exemption for airport taxi company Super Shuttle, based in Arizona.

“I would have liked to believe that they would have shown support for the governor of Arizona and for the people of Arizona,” Brewer told Capitol Media Services

This is where we need to go, as a country, in support of Arizona, America and Governor Brewer. “You take care of those taking care of those.” NO, she is not perfect, YES, she is defending what is JUST!…for this a Standing Ovation!
Now what can we as a collective group of thinkers and DOers…do in upsetting the wagon carts, opening the dialogue to the “other” Governors that seem to lean towards the group think of disaster….

Our Turn.
